Morcambe Coach Holiday May 2019

Morecambe Holiday

12 May 2019 for 5 nights

Despite some initial misgivings from some members, relating to the location and the perceived image of Morecambe, I think most people were very pleasantly surprised by the sea front and scenery from Morecambe itself and the wide variety of walking areas available close by.

As is customary, there was an attempt to break the journey with a place of interest, rather than a service station, and this involved a lunch stop in Skipton on the way there and a visit to the Wedgewood Museum on the return journey.

Thirty-three members took part in the holiday and, as usual, there were both a B walk and a C walk on each of the three walking days. These walks were led by Bob and Wendy, Derek, Barbara, Malcolm, Brian, Catriona and David, and despite the fact that, as usual the walks were not reccied in advance, all leaders returned with the same number as they set out with! Whilst perhaps not appreciated by those on the B walk at Arnside, the slightly longer time for the walk than anticipated meant the C walkers could appreciate the drinks at the pub, sitting in the sun, overlooking the water, whilst waiting for their return.

I would like to thank those leaders for volunteering, or being press-ganged as the case may be.

The day off led to most members either going to Bowness on Lake Windemere or exploring Lancaster, and in addition there was the opportunity for some to explore Sizergh Castle at the end of a walk.

Whilst Morecambe has undoubtedly seen better times, the Council seem to be doing their best to improve the sea front. The views across the bay and the sunsets were stunning.

A memorable visit for many was a visit to the Art Deco Midland Hotel including the mystery of the separate and then unisex entrance to the impressive toilets.
