Walcote Walk

July 23, 2016

The day after the hottest day of the year 22 walkers gathered in the village of Walcote to join a walk led by Janet.  Although not the hottest day, it was still a bit of a scorcher but fortunately the start of the way meandered through woodland, which provided us with a bit of welcome shade.

Breaking free from the cover of trees the weather continued to be kind to us a high cloud cover, with intermittent burst of sunshine helped us on our way.  Much of the paths were clearly not heavily used and we needed to 'hack' back enthusiastic brambles and nettles in one or two places. Stiles and 'kissing gates' seemed in abundance making some sections appear almost like an obstacle course.  But these did not distract from a very interesting and enjoyable walk.

Lunch was had at The Red Lion, Gilmorton, which was less known to us walkers than the Grey Goose and Rose and Crown.  However, it was certainly on a par with both and we enjoyed a lovely meal (and a few glasses) from a cheery waitress.

For the afternoon return the skies cleared and the sun shone.  Our sensible leader held several water and shade stops to help us recover from what was then sweltering heat. After nearly 3.5 miles, crossing mainly arable farmland, we emerged from the field and returned to our cars.
