Carole and Pete's Saddington Walk

Carole and Pete's initial reccy of this walk gave us 10.5 miles – so it was shortened and some changes made to avoid muddy fields. Because of this they were a bit apprehensive about it as they actually walked it the other way round!

They need not have worried! It was a beautiful, springlike day full of birdsong and glorious countryside. 22 people (plus 3 extras who, due to injury - another story altogether - kept to the roads and joined us for lunch) turned up at the Grammar School meeting point.  From here they walked across the fields to Debdale Lane and then enjoyed some easy hard surfaces towards Gumley. Coffee and Lynne’s birthday biscuits (thank you Lynne) were consumed before they left the lane and climbed Saddington Hill to look out over one of the best views in Leicestershire (well that’s what someone said).

Downhill then and fortunately not too muddy over the stream and to the Queens Head in Saddington. They enjoyed efficiently served, good quality food - including what must be some of the best handcut (real) potato chips in Leicestershire.

Appetites sated, the afternoon took them over the fields to Fleckney.  Careful manoeuvering through one particularly wet gateway held them up which reassured the leaders that the decision they had taken to shorten it was correct. Thence, it was through the village and back across fields to Kibworth.

"A super day out – mainly because of the unbroken sunshine all day – I think we all enjoyed it. And it contributed a welcome 8.5miles to one leaders aim to walk 1000miles this year!!", saod Carole.
